❓ FAQ – Camp Why Not
Answers to the most common questions about joining, camping, and contributing.
Camp Why Not is a private community of awesome, like-minded humans from all over the world. We’re a crew of burners
united by shared values, interests, and passions.
Our main gift is music and parties – we run a stage that aims to deliver the best sound and vibe we can. In addition to our stage, we offer gifts in the form of food, drinks, massage, a chilling area, and more.
We’re a private theme camp with both public and private spaces and encourage burners to enjoy our gifts throughout the week.
We are a work hard, play hard camp: every single member is expected to contribute to creating the magic – whether that’s an ice shift, kitchen duty, or MOOP’ing the dance floor.

Yes and no. We keep an intimate, tight-knit community of WhyNotters camping with us. We value personal relationships and
want to know everyone in the camp, to make sure they’re the right people for us – and we’re the right camp for them.
Most new members join through referrals from current or previous WhyNotters. Exceptional applications can still be considered depending on available spots.
If you don’t have a referral but feel Why Not is your camp, fill out our contact form and we’ll get back to you with more details.

Joining Camp Why Not follows a clear and personal process — we want to make sure every new member is aligned with our
culture, values, and community energy.
For AB26, the flow is:
1. Submit the application form on our website.
2. If your application is a good fit, you’ll be invited to a call with an HQ member.
3. If you get the green light after the call, you’ll be invited to create an account on campwhynot.com.
4. Once your account is approved, you pay the camp fee to confirm your spot.
5. You then join a team aligned with your skills and interests.
6. Finally, every member must sign up for at least 3 shifts per burner to help distribute the camp workload fairly.
Every step is there to keep Why Not a tight, committed, high-functioning community.

In early March we email all registered campers with a link to our master shift spreadsheet. Shifts are organised by area
(Kitchen, Water, MOOP, Stage Management, etc.). Every member must sign up for at least 3 shifts across different
types of work – not just the shiny ones.
If you arrive later in the week (e.g. Wednesday or Thursday), you still need to complete the required number of shifts. On top of this, all campers are expected to help with camp setup or breakdown.

Camp Breakdown is when we take the entire camp down, pack everything out, and make sure we leave no trace.
We build Why Not in a couple of intense days — and then we reverse the process in a focused, coordinated breakdown mission. A big part of this is MOOP (Matter Out Of Place): we sweep the entire camp to leave the site cleaner than we found it.
Exact breakdown times and days are shared in HQ comms and during on-site briefings.

Breakdown is mandatory for all Camp Why Not members unless you are excused by HQ for a legitimate reason.
If you cannot stay for Breakdown, you have two options:
1️⃣ Extra Contribution Option
• Do one extra shift during the burn
• AND complete a Breakdown task assigned by HQ before you leave
2️⃣ Financial Contribution Option
• Contribute 200€ for a “Get Out of Jail” card
• This contribution goes directly to the Why Not Art Fund to support new upgrades and creations
Breakdown is crucial — it’s our final gift to the desert and a big part of why Why Not has a strong reputation at AfrikaBurn. Everyone contributes, one way or another.

MOOP is everything. It’s how we’re remembered and how we’re evaluated as a camp.
Before leaving, we do a mega-MOOP sweep to get sign-off on the camp – we cannot leave until that’s done.
We’ve maintained a Green MOOP score every year and intend to keep it that way.
Each morning and evening, MOOP teams sweep public and private spaces. Every member is responsible for MOOP’ing their own camping area and packing out all personal trash.

Yes. We run a generator to power the camp. High-wattage devices like hairdryers are generally not allowed unless
you check with the Power Team first, to ensure they don’t break the power plan.
There will be a charging station for phones, cameras, and other small devices.

We have two camp showers exclusive to camp members. Please be mindful of water usage and always leave the showers
in a state you’d like to find them.
The camp provides two meals a day (breakfast & dinner) plus a daily snack hour.
If you want to eat outside those times, or if you miss a meal, bring your own backup snacks and treats so you’re sorted when the kitchen is closed.

Yes. The camp provides water, coffee, and tea only. Any other drinks (soft drinks, alcohol, juice, etc.) are your
responsibility.
Please avoid glass as much as possible – it’s a MOOP nightmare. If you do bring glass, plan to take it back out with you.
